Cal Poly Bands Celebrated “American Masters” at Bandfest on November 13
Nearly 300 students performed at Cal Poly’s annual Bandfest at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
The show, titled “American Masters,” featured the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble in an evening of bold and powerful works by living American composers for the modern symphonic band. The evening also featured a special appearance by the Cal Poly Mustang Marching Band, performing high energy selections for the traditional stadium band.
The concert began with the Wind Orchestra performing Brian Balmages' “Elements”, “Lux Arumque” by Eric Whitacre, “Magnolia Star” by Steve Danyew and Robert Sheldon’s “Stormchasers”. The Wind Ensemble then continued the concert with performances of “Celebrations” by John Zdechlik, “Rest” by Frank Ticheli, Karel Husa’s “Al Fresco”, selections from “Culloden” by Julie Giroux, and “March of the Resistance” (from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS) by John Williams..
The Mustang Band concluded the concert with arrangements they performed at this fall’s football games in Spanos Stadium. Along with traditional favorites, the band performed music from the great rock bands Rush and Queen as well as selections from the “Star Trek” films and soundtrack scores of John Williams.
