Cal Poly Wind Bands' Winter Concert Set for March 17
Cal Poly's Winter Band Concert featuring the 70-member Wind Ensemble and 80-member Wind Orchestra is set for 8 p.m. Friday, March 17, in Harman Hall of the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.
The Wind Orchestra will begin the concert with a set of works for concert band including "Variations on ‘America'" by Charles Ives, "Trauermusik" by Richard Wagner, "Riften Wed" by Julie Giroux and "The Thunderer" by John Philip Sousa.
The concert continues with two works for reduced instrumentation, featuring performers from the Wind Ensemble. The brass and percussion will present "Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare" by Richard Strauss. Then, select members of the Wind Ensemble will accompany student Kelsey Beisecker as she performs Cécile Chaminade's "Concertino" for solo flute. Beisecker, who is majoring in music and economics, will graduate in March.
The Wind Ensemble will also perform "Esprit de Corps" by Robert Jager, "Give Us This Day" by David Maslanka, "Only Light" by Aaron Perrine and two marches: "Country Band March" by Charles Ives and "Ringmaster's March" by John Mackey.
Andrew McMahan, Cal Poly director of bands, and Christopher J. Woodruff, associate director of bands, will conduct the concert.
Tickets are $12 and $14 for the public and $9 and $12 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
