BANDFEST 2013!
Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble & Mustang Marching Band

A tradition for more than 20 years, Cal Poly’s annual Bandfest concert features all of the wind bands on campus. The concert begins with the Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra in superior performances of both traditional and new literature written for concert band and wind ensembles. Then the powerful Pride of the Pacific marching band fills the concert hall with stunning arrangements performed at football games throughout the fall in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The concert ends with a spectacular event featuring performers from all ensembles collaborating on stage together.
A NIGHT AT THE MISSION
Cal Poly Brass, Woodwind, and String Chamber Ensembles

"A Night at the Mission" has become a popular event in our annual concert series. Cal Poly invites you an evening of beautiful music performed by our chamber ensembles in the Old Mission Church. This concert features performances by several groups such as the brass choir, small brass ensembles, trumpet ensemble, brass quintet, clarinet ensemble, flute quartet, saxophone quartet, string quartet, woodwind quintet, and other mixed chamber groups involving brass, woodwoods, and/or string performers.

Featuring trombonist Ko-Ichiro Yamamoto
The Cal Poly wind bands present their annual winter concert featuring guest artist and world-renowned trombonist
Ko-ichiro Yamamoto. Yamamoto is one of the foremost Japanese trombonists of his generation, currently acting as the principal trombonist for the Seattle Symphony and Saito-Kinen
Orchestras. He is also on the faculty at the University of Washington School of Music. Active as a soloist, recitalist, chamber music performer, and clinician, Yamamoto has performed with
orchestras from around the world, including the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Chamber Orchestra. In addition to solo works for trombone and band featuring Yamamoto, the Wind
Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform several selections that highlight the power and splendor of the modern wind band as well as the virtuosity of the students at Cal Poly.

The Cal Poly Music Department will present an evening of woodwind chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church. Featuring several Cal Poly music ensembles, students will perform a variety of traditional and contemporary repertoire for woodwind instruments. Included in the concert will be performances by groups such as woodwind quintet, saxophone quartet, flute quartet, string quartet, and clarinet ensemble.

The Cal Poly Music Department will present an evening of brass chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church. Featuring several Cal Poly music ensembles, students will perform a variety of traditional and contemporary repertoire for brass instruments. Included in the concert will be performances by groups such as trumpet ensemble, horn choir, brass choir, brass quintets, trombone quartet, tuba/euphonium quartet, and trombone choir.
POLYRHYTHMICS
Cal Poly Percussion Ensemble

Pavilion (San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center)
The Cal Poly Music Department will present an evening of percussion ensemble music at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, in the Pavilion of the San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center. The program will include works by Alan Hovhaness, Christopher Rouse, King Crimson, Aurel Hollo, Mutsuhito Ogino, James Holt, and Music Department alum Kevin Capacia. The ensemble is directed by Music Department faculty member John Astaire who writes: “This recital features a wide array of exotic percussion instruments and promises to deliver an evening of impassioned and exhilarating performances. The music we're performing this year has elements of fiery rhythmic passion, and gentle harmonic meditation.”

Featuring percussionist John Astaire and pianist Alessandra Shanus
The Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra end their season with a concert featuring percussionist John Astaire. A distinguished alumnus of Cal Poly, Astaire has made a name for himself as a percussion performer at the highest level through concerts with the Kylix Contemporary Music Ensemble, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, San Luis Obispo Symphony and many others. Astaire will be featured in solo compositions with accompaniment by both the Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra. The concert will also include exciting new and traditional compositions for concert band and wind ensemble: works that showcase the talent and virtuosity of the student instrumentalists involved in the Cal Poly band program.
