Band Handbook:
The following resources are designed to help students achieve their full potential while participating in the Cal Poly Band Program. Although the material covered via these links is not required reading, all band members are encouraged to utilize the information found therein.
Anyone who practices, rehearses or performs instrumental or vocal music has the potential to suffer injury related to that activity. Instrumental musicians are at risk for repetitive motion injuries. Sizable percentages of them develop health issues related to practicing and performing; and if they are also computer users, their risks are compounded. Instrumental injuries often include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and bursitis. Incorrect posture, non-ergonomic technique, excessive force, overuse, stress, and insufficient rest contribute to chronic injuries that can cause great pain, disability, and the end of careers.
Cal Poly Bands wish to provide a healthy experience for all our students. Toward that end, as well as for lifelong music-making, performance health guidance is included in instruction. As hearing health is a priority for indoor and outdoor performances, musicians' earplugs are made available to all members of the band program.
